Ontario PC leader Doug Ford is facing criticism for his comment about immigration made during Friday’s leaders debate. But Doug Ford’s campaign team says the PC leader is supportive of immigrants following backlash for a saying that Ontario needs to “take care of our own.’ During the debate, Ford said the government would have to exhaust every option for employing locals before relying on immigrants to fill jobs in sparsely populated areas. Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne says Ford will have to explain exactly what he meant by the comment, which she found “very disturbing”. Both Wynne and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath say they would consider an immigration project to draw workers to the northern parts of the province with declining populations. Wynne says that in a country where everyone except Indigenous people are immigrants, she doesn’t know who Ford considers “our own.”
