A new study suggests Canadian baby boomers be tested for the potentially liver-destroying virus hepatitis C. Study co-author Doctor Jordan Feld says most Canadians with the disease were born between 1945 and 1975 and says the testing should be routine, like blood pressure and cholesterol testing. More than 250-thousand Canadians are believed to be infected, but between 40 and 70 per cent of them are unaware they have the blood-borne virus. That’s because it can take decades for the symptoms to become evident although chronic infection can lead to cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. The study is published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
