It may soon be possible to screen patients for Alzheimer’s disease using a simple eye exam. Using technology similar to what is found in eye doctors’ offices, researchers have detected evidence indicating the disease in older patients who had no symptoms. The authors at Washington University in St. Louis say the technique has great potential to become a screening tool that helps decide who should undergo more expensive and invasive testing for the disease, prior to the onset of symptoms. The authors note that significant brain damage from Alzheimer’s can happen years before any symptoms appear. The new study is in JAMA Ophthalmology.
