PROVINCE CONSIDERS REMOVING CAPS ON CLASS SIZE

Changes could be coming to class sizes in some Ontario elementary classrooms. The province’s education minister launched consultations on class sizes and teacher hiring practices as the province considers removing caps on class sizes. Currently, the kindergarten class size cap is 29 students 23 for primary grades. The president of the Elementary Teachers Union says at a meeting Wednesday the government warned it would have to make some difficult decisions as it tackles the deficit. Sam Hammond says “there’s no doubt” some of those decisions will affect public education.He says increasing class sizes would have a detrimental effect on the learning environment.
