It’s being called a “transformative clinical research partnership”, but former NHL players are calling it hope.
Hope that one day there will be therapies that can reduce the severity of post-concussion brain disorders.
The NHL Alumni Association has teamed up with Canopy Growth Corporation and NEEKA Health Canada to research the efficacy of cannabinoids to treat post-concussion diseases.
“We are one of the most highly-afflicted with regards to, and I’ll use the word concussion once. And that’s it with regard to concussion. Its functional integration that happens to players with multiple concussive blows.” said Glen Healy, the Executive Director of the NHL Alumni Association.
The study is being conducted by neurosurgeons with NEEKA Health Canada and is set to begin this summer.
Approximately 100 former players are expected to take part in the research program.
