On this Earth Day, Ontario’s Green Party leader is calling the Doug Ford government one of the most “anti-environmental” in generations. Mike Schreiner is critical of just about everything the PC government has done since taking power including cancelling cap-and-trade, reduced funding to the ministry of natural resources, eliminating the environmental commissioner of Ontario and changes to the endangered species act. The province has also cut funding for flood management programs across the province. The Ontario Conservation Authority programs had previously received 7.4 million dollars from the provincial government but will now be getting half that amount. Conservation Ontario, which represents the province’s 36 conservation authorities, says the impact will be felt immediately, especially in smaller and more rural areas. The governing Tories say they have asked conservation authorities to focus on their core mandate as they look for ways to eliminate Ontario’s 11.7 billion dollar deficit. The PC government is defending its plan for the environment despite mounting criticism that it’s not aggressive enough.
