Premier Ford’s changes to child-care funding are expected to cost the city almost $85 million dollars this year alone putting at risk over 6,100 hundred spaces for low income parents.

The shocking numbers are contained in an email the city manager sent to Mayor John Tory. A published report says the email goes on to say that Ford’s April budget didn’t offer enough information on Toronto’s funding for subsidized day care. Toronto councillors and daycare advocates will hold a news conference Friday to demand the Ford government reverse course and re-instate a $50 million fund that helps child-care centres cover labour costs without passing the extra costs to parents. As a result of the funding cut, at least one Peel Region day care says it’s forced to charge an extra 72 dollars per month for full time infant care.
