For the first time in its 94 year history, the Scripps National Spelling Bee ended in an 8-way tie.
Judges couldn’t come up with enough difficult words to challenge the competitors during the intense three-hour final round that kept competitors up long after their bed time. Down from the initial field of 562 contestants, the final eight went for 20 straight rounds of spelling without any errors. Here’s a sample of the words put to the 12 to 14 year olds; callejón, omphalopsychite and auftaktigkeit.
