A tiny wireless sensor is making a big difference for heart failure patients in Calgary. Dr. Brian Clarke from the Foothills Medical Centre says the device is just 15 millimetres long and implanted in the pulmonary artery. It measures lung pressure which alerts doctors to any potential problems with ongoing treatment. The device is part of a pilot project that has already been implanted in six patients and will eventually involve a total of 15 patients before the study’s completion in early 2020.

Calgary schoolteacher Michelle Kotelko says her life has changed for the better since having a tiny wireless sensor implanted in her heart nearly a year ago. Kotelko, who was born with a rare heart defect, had the CardioMEMS device implanted in her pulmonary artery. It sends daily updates to physicians about her lung pressure and makes it easier to treat her. She had been facing a possible lung and heart transplant.
