He is being remembered as the Master of sensuality, colours and flamboyance.

French fashion designer Emanuel Ungaro passed away on Sunday.

In a 2011 interview, the designer discussed starting up his own fashion house at just 33-years-old.

“You need to prove yourself.  You need to prove (you have) the capacity to do things.  Have no choice.  You cannot work in a big house to prove what you are.  And I’m in love with freedom.  I need to have my freedom to do exactly what I want to do.” said Ungaro.

Ungaro was a favourite of  Jacqueline Kennedy, Gena Rowlands and Catherine Deneuve for his use of vibrant colours, mixed prints and elegant draping.

He sold the company to the Italian group Ferragamo in 1996, and retired from fashion in 2004.

Ungaro died yesterday at the age of 86.
