Premier Doug Ford’s government has come under fire for its handling of long term care homes during the pandemic. He told reporters Wednesday he’s “sent in the cavalry” by deploying medical swat teams into long term care homes. The premier also announced an increase in COVID-19 testing with over 9,000 Wednesday, and a goal of 14,000 per day by month’s end. The government says over the last 24 hours, five Toronto hospitals have banded together to help 38 long term care homes. In addition, hospitals can no longer transfer patients to homes.
The province now has over 20,000 acute care beds and more than 2,800 have ventilators. Health Minister Christine Elliott says they’re prepared for a surge in cases, if that happens. The Premier says he’ll announce updated modelling on COVID-19 next week.
