CONFUSION OVER FAMILY VISITS AND SOCIAL GATHERING

What exactly are the rules about visiting with family during the pandemic? The province’s emergency order states Ontario residents should NOT gather in groups larger than five but it does not apply to households of five or more. Opposition Leader Andrea Horwath says the Premier made ‘his own choice’ this weekend. “I get it, Mother’s Day was on the weekend and  I have to say there were mixed messages being put out by various political leaders about Mother’s Day and I think it leads to confusion,” said Horwath.

Premier Doug Ford defended his family gathering on Mother’s Day that included his wife and four daughters, but two don’t live with him. “From the Chief Medical Officer right now, he still wants to keep it immediate family and I have two girls living with me and two not living with me so we had two more at home but when it comes to seniors and our parents use your best judgement,” said Ford.

Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams avoided direct criticism of the premier’s weekend visit but stressed it’s important to follow the rules. Ford said the directive on family gatherings could change in the next few weeks.

This is the second time Ford has been criticized for not following the rules. On Easter Sunday, he drove to his cottage north of the city to check on plumbing.
