The province has announced a new COVID-19 recovery rate. It means Ontario Hydro customers will pay a fixed rate of 12.8 cents a kilowatt hour 24 hours a day until October 31st as the province suspends time of use pricing. Energy minister Greg Rickford denies the new hydro relief measures will translate into a higher hydro bill for most. “Households will notice very little difference if any from one bill to the rest,” said Rickford. “It’s lower than the on peak and mid peak ranges so it’s still a very low effective rate and works very well for small businesses, farmers and ratepayers,” says Rickford. Doug Ford says for families struggling right now, no customer will have their power cut off because they can’t afford to pay hydro bill right now. This new rate is actually up from the previous pandemic rate when users were paying 10.1 cents per kilowatt hour. When the recovery rate expires, the province says users will be able to choose a new plan between time of use rates or tiered pricing.
