New figures estimate that over half a million Canadian households are food insecure because of COVID-19. And regrettably, things will likely get worse by the fall. One Toronto senior felt compelled to act by raising money for the Daily Bread Food Bank.

At 80, Suzanne Wilkinson says she’s never felt better and after surgery four years ago, she’s putting her two new knees to work, walking to raise money for the Daily Bread Food Bank to help those hit hard by the pandemic.

“I don’t have pain and fortunately am in pretty good health and I have the ability to walk and I walk fast,” says Suzanne.

The ordained minister who works mostly with seniors lost her job when the pandemic hit. Other than a mild voice disability, Suzanne says she’s healthy and what better way to give back than thru exercise.

“I was aware that many had lost jobs and fallen into poverty due to no fault of their own.”

The Thornhill senior has now walked 276 km, the distance to Niagara Falls but all from her home whether in her parking garage in March when weather was bad to now, racking up the kilometres outside in nearby parks.

Jeff Wong with the Daily Bread Food bank, says Suzanne approached them with the idea which was fantastic.

“We gave her tools to help organize this and then she was walking up a storm,” says Jeff.

Due to the pandemic, the food bank has fewer volunteers despite a growing demand.

“Across our whole network, we’re up 33 percent, which doesn’t surprise me,” adds Jeff.

Suzanne continues to walk 5 miles a day and hopes to raise $10,000 for the food bank For more on Suzanne’s Walk to Fight Hunger, visit
