The province has officially announced its independent commission looking into the devastating impact of COVID-19 in long term care. Minister Merillee Fullerton promises it will be fully transparent despite criticism that it’s not a full inquiry.

“This commission will investigate how COVID-19 spead within long term care homes,” Fullerton announced.

“It will provide our government with guidance on how to better protect long term care home residents and staff from any future outbreaks.”

Premier Doug Ford has previously agreed as a witness if called by the commission, to be lead by Associate Chief Justice Frank Marrocco ho was lead counsel for the province in the Walkerton inquiry.

Commissioners will be able to make recommendations for systemic change but the Premier isn’t saying if their findings are binding.

The final report to be delivered next April will be made public.

Meantime, the NDP have been calling for a full public inquiry into long term care, and MPP Gurratan Singh says this commission doesn’t even do the bare minimum.
