Journalist, commentator and sociologist Gail Sheehy has died at 83.

Her best seller Passages published in 1976 helped millions navigate their lives from early adulthood thru middle age and beyond.

In a 2014 interview when she was in her ’70’s, Sheehy encouraged people the same age to take stock of their lives.

“I’ve been interviewing thousands of men and women and examining their lives and collaborating with them on putting together the story of how they grew and I thought when I pass into my ’70s’, it was time to turn the lens on my own life and see how did I make my choices,” said Sheehy.

Sheehy died from pneumonia in New York.

When not writing books, Sheehy was a popular lecturer and TV commentator and a well-travelled journalist specializing in psychological portraits of public figures.

She was married to  New York magazine founder Clay Felker, and leaves behind a daughter.
