Canada will be among the first nations in the world to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

The first shipment of 30,000 doses is set to arrive in this country on Monday after it received approval by Health Canada Wednesday.

In Ontario, the first doses are expected to go to long term care workers since the Pfizer vaccine cannot be transported to the nursing homes for direct inoculation of vulnerable residents.

Oakville MP and Federal Procurement Minister Anita Anand says the first shipment will transit from Europe through the United States.

“We do not expect any hold-up at all with regards to the Pfizer doses,” Anand reassured, “In our contracting, we were very deliberate in ensuring we had a diverse range of manufacturing facilities built into our contract so that we would be ensured to access the supplies, the vaccines that we have contracted for.”

Canada is the 3rd country to approve the Pfizer vaccine with other vaccine candidates moving through the approval process.

But a word of caution from Epidemiologist Dr. Prabhat Jha on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer.

“I would caution that we should always not think the COVID vaccines are going to be a magic bullet that our going to end the pandemic,” Dr. Jha told Libby.

Dr. Jha adds vaccines should be considered one of the key pillars in the fight. Listen to Dr. Jha’s full conversation by clicking here.
