In Britain, they called her a ‘4-foot-10 national treasure.’British actress Dame Barbara Windsor has died at 83 at a nursing care home Thursday. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2014. Her seven-decade career ranged from the cheeky Carry On films to the popular soap opera EastEnders.
Windsor was made a dame, the female equivalent of a knight, by the queen in 2016 for services to entertainment and for her work raising awareness about dementia. Husband says the final weeks of her life were typical of how she lived – full of humour, drama and a fighting spirit.
