Toronto’s mayor says it’s highly unlikely restrictions will be loosened when the current 28 day lockdown period ends on Sunday.
In fact, John Tory expects restrictions will become even tighter through Christmas and into the new year.
“I will certainly be engaged and have been in discussions with our own medical people and with the premier about things that we need to do in order make sure that we can take advantage of this period when I think things would be much quieter anyway to make sure we attack numbers that are extremely alarming in respect of the healthcare system, you can see what the hospitals are saying and doing in response to that,” said Tory as he referenced a request for hospitals in the grey and red zones to make more space for COVID patients, “That means peoples’ medical procedures are being postponed, we have more people in ICU than in the spring when we took things very seriously.”
Mayor Tory says we should return to the way we approached the lockdown back in the spring. He also points to Quebec, where Premier Francois Legault has announced all non essential businesses will close from Christmas Day until at least January 11th. Legault also says big box stores will be prohibited from selling any goods deemed non essential and schools will close Thursday and will not reopen until January 11th at the earliest.
