Organizers of drive-thru Christmas light festivals say the province missed the mark when it lumped their contactless in-vehicle events into the strict Ontario-wide lockdown that takes effect on Saturday.
What’s become an annual tradition for many will be going dark weeks earlier than planned under the new measures. But several light show organizers hope last-minute lobbying will convince the Ford government to make their drive-thru shows an exception.
Monica Gomez whose Polar Drive near Pearson Airport was set to run until January, says it makes no sense that her contactless event has to shut down while drive-thru fast-food restaurants can still hand items through the pick-up window.
And in Vaughan, organizers with Holiday Nights of Lights say they’re not opposed to the lockdown but the province missed the mark on this one.
Ontario residents are being told to stay home and only go out for essential services as a new province-wide month-long lockdown begins December 26, two weeks for areas in Northern Ontario.
