The Canadian government has an agreement to purchase 20 more million doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine.
That doubles the amount the country is to receive from the company and brings the total number of doses scheduled to arrive this year from Pfizer and Moderna to 80-million.
Procurement Minister Anita Anand says the extra 20-million doses come from the 56-million Ottawa had an option to purchase.
Anand adds it’s still possible that the government might decide to buy the other 36-million doses.
Negotiations with Pfizer have led to the drug maker to move up the delivery of 2-million doses; originally scheduled for the third quarter to the second quarter.
”Once we enter the second and third quarters,” says Anand, ”Canadians will see a dramatic acceleration in the pace of scheduled vaccine deliveries.”
