Pointing out how ridership has decreased by more than 90% because of the pandemic, the province says starting Saturday, GO Transit is temporarily replacing select train service with buses and reducing service on UP Express.
Associate Transportation Minister Kinga Surma says it’s doing this to meet demand while still ensuring safe travel, ”particularly for frontline workers who rely on transit to get to where they’re needed most.”
But NDP transit critic, Jessica Bell, says with fewer trains and cars, there could be more overcrowding that will only increase the risk of spreading the virus.
”By cutting GO transit service, Doug Ford is needlessly putting the safety of essential workers at risk,” says Bell.
”Ford must keep GO service at current levels to ensure Ontarians who need to go to work can easily socially distance on transit and stop the spread.”
