The first phone call by new U.S. President Joe Biden to a foreign leader will be with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The White House press secretary says the two leaders will discuss the important relationship between Canada and the United States, as well as Biden’s decision to cancel the Keystone X-L pipeline.

Trudeau has released a statement on that, saying he is disappointed but acknowledges Biden had made the promise to cancel Keystone during the election campaign.

The 8-billion dollar U.S. cross border pipeline expansion stalled throughout Barack Obama’s two terms, before it was cancelled in 2015, then twice resurrected by Former President Donald Trump.

Alberta’s Premier Jason Kenney is suggesting Canada should consider trade sanctions against the U.S.

“This is a gut punch for the Canadian and Alberta economics,” Kenney lamented Wednesday, “Sadly it is an insult directed at the United States’ most important ally and trading partner on day one of a new administration.”

Kenney went on to reveal that “over 2,000 women and men have lost their jobs, are heading home from good paying union jobs as a result of this decision.”

On Biden’s other executives orders issued on his first day as U.S. president, Canada’s prime minister welcomed the U.S. rejoining the Paris Climate Accord, a moratorium on oil and gas drilling in the Arctic and reversing the travel ban on Muslim-majority countries.
