Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Christine Elliott were pressed to explain why the government refuses to call in the military at long term care homes, like Roberta Place in Barrie where 40 residents have died from COVID, 80 more are infected along with 86 staff.

“When I asked that question, I was told that we don’t need them,” said Ford.

“There is support that’s coming in, in addition to whatever support the Red Cross can offer,” added Elliott. “We now have an association between long term care homes and hospitals.”

Vaccine task force chair General Rick Hillier says almost 80 percent of long term care residents have been vaccinated. Officials say Ontario has the capacity to vaccinate 40,000 people a day and hope to triple that, depending on supply.  The premier renewed his promise that anyone in Ontario who wants the vaccine, will get it by the summer.

Ford began the Monday briefing by saying he’s spoken with Israeli officials about that country’s successful vaccine rollout. Minister Elliott says after speaking with Israel officials, it was clear they experienced vaccine hesitancy in their country but the number of those against getting the vaccine fell once mass vaccinations began.

Meantime, Ontario has extended the state of emergency until February 8th.
