Kris Kristofferson is retiring.

The 84-year-old Grammy-winning singer-songwriter announced he’s stepping away from the music scene after five decades. He actually retired last year, but it’s just now being made public.

Kristofferson brought poetic lyrics to country music with songs like  Me and Bobby McGee, Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down  and was a member of the group The Highwaymen.

His son has stepped in to oversee his father’s business, including special projects and his record label.

Kristofferson was inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame and was awarded the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriter Hall of Fame.

He also received a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy.
