JOURNEYMAN ACTOR HAL HOLBROOK DIES AT 95

He carved out an impressive career in television and film but achieved the widest acclaim for his one-man stage show, playing American humourist Mark Twain for more than six decades.

Hal Holbrook has died at the age of 95. He actually passed away January 23rd, but his assistant released the news on February 1st.

Holbrook was 29 when he started playing Twain at the age of 70, and once quipped as he grew older he needed less and less makeup.

Among his many other roles, the shadowy patriot Deep Throat in the 1976 film All the President’s Men, a grandfatherly character in 2007’s Into the Wild for which he received an Oscar nomination, the influential Republican Preston Blair in Steven Spielberg’s 2012 production of Lincoln and Holbrook portrayed mentor Lou Mannheim who imparted wisdom on the young stock broker played by Charlie Sheen in the 1987 movie Wall Street.
