The federal government has now designated 13 groups, including the Proud Boys, as terrorist entities.
Public Safety Minister Bill Blair says Ottawa considers the Proud Boys, the Atomwaffen Division (AWD), the Base and the Russian Imperial Movement as ”ideologically motivated violent extremists.”
In adding these groups to the list, Blair hopes it will send a message that their actions will not be tolerated.
”No matter the ideological motivation, they’re all hateful, intolerant and, as we’ve seen, they can be highly dangerous.”
The Proud Boys played a major role in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capital.
A self-described organizer for the group has been arrested for his part in the insurrection.
One security official says the attack ”wasn’t the only factor and it wasn’t the driving factor” in designating the Proud Boys as a terrorist entity.
Groups on the list; created after the 9-1-1 attacks, may have their assets seized and there are serious criminal penalties for helping listed organizations carry out extremists activities.
