ONCE 70-PLUS ADULTS GET VACCINATED AGAINST COVID-19, ADULTS IN RACIALIZED COMMUNITIES SHOULD BE NEXT: NACI

A statement from Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization says adults from racialized communities most affected by COVID-19 should be prioritized for shots.

There is also a recommendation for essential workers who cannot do their jobs from home to be a priority.

The guidance applies to the second stage of Canada’s vaccination campaign to begin this Spring after provinces get COVID-19 inoculations into the arms of all adults aged 70 or older, front-line health workers and adults in Indigenous communities.

But Bill Van Gorder, interim chief policy officer at the Zoomers’ group CARP, told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, the Ontario government has been very poor in following any vaccine related recommendations to date.

“Right at the beginning, the recommendation was those people most at risk of dying would get them first and now we say that they’ve gone past that. The other provinces are going over 70, they’re going over 60, and here in Ontario, we’re putting all kinds of people ahead of our most at-risk citizens,” Van Gorder explained.

Meantime, word from Ontario’s Ministry of Health, a web portal is being developed for booking COVID-19 vaccine appointments when mass immunization is underway.

The online site will be for vaccine appointments, while a customer service desk will also be available for those not comfortable using the web portal.

Experts and critics say that more details about the vaccine roll out plan are needed to ensure vulnerable residents don’t lose their earliest opportunity to receive a COVID-19 shot.

Listen to Fight Back Tuesday for Libby’s special guest, Dr. Dirk Huyer, coordinator of the provincial response to the outbreak. We are hoping to get more information for those of Ontario residents 80-plus and 70-plus as to when and where they can get a vaccine once mass vaccinations begin.
