The Trudeau government’s introduced new gun-control legislation that would introduce a buy-back program for blacklisted firearms, allow municipalities to ban handguns and increase criminal penalties for gun smuggling and trafficking.
Bill C-21 comes nine months after the government announced a ban on the use, sale and importation of more than 1,500 makes and models of what the Liberals refer to as ”assault-style weapons.”
A two-year amnesty has been in place since last May to give Canadians who already own these firearms time to comply with the ban.
The amnesty will last until April 30, 2022.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government will proceed with legislation to amend the Criminal Code and Firearms Act.
Apparently, a voluntary buy-back program will be introduced in the coming months.
