In the first bilateral meeting between Justin Trudeau and Joe Biden, Canada’s prime minister meets virtually with the new American president Tuesday afternoon at 4 o’clock.

Trudeau is likely to ask Biden for assistance in procuring COVID-19 vaccines, since Canada has apparently been squeezed by production problems in Europe.

The two leaders are also expected to talk about China, where Canadians Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig have been detained for more than two years.

Critics also want Trudeau to push hard for a Canadian exemption from plans to prioritize U.S. businesses for federal infrastructure and procurement.

The White House press secretary says no immediate changes are in the works.

Before their meeting on Tuesday, the leaders said they looked forward to deepening the relationship between the countries, and Trudeau said they would discuss ways to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic, create jobs and fight climate change.

When he was U.S. vice-president under Barack Obama, Joe Biden met with Trudeau in Ottawa in December of 2016.

Meantime, the U.S. president has acknowledged the grim milestone of 500,000 COVID-19 related deaths in his country with sunset remarks and a national moment of silence Monday evening.
