Poet, publisher and bookseller Lawrence Ferlinghetti has died in San Francisco.

Ferlinghetti helped launch and perpetuate the Beat movement from his City Lights bookstore and publishing house in San Francisco.  It was an essential meeting place for beat poets like Alan Ginsburg, author Jack Kerouac and other bohemians in the 1950s and beyond.

In addition to being a champion of the Beats, Ferlinghetti was himself a prolific writer of wide talents and interests whose work evaded easy definition, mixing disarming simplicity, sharp humor and social consciousness.

His daughter confirmed the cause of death as interstitial lung disease,.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti was 101.
