The Zoomers’ group CARP says programs to train more personal support workers for long term care, like the one announced Wednesday by Ontario’s premier and his long term care minister, should have been announced last summer, not now.

Dr. Merrilee Fullerton has provided details of a $115-million plan to help train 8200 new personal support workers.

“Six-thousand of these students will be receiving a fully government funded PSW education as well as paid placements for their workplace based learning,” Fullerton detailed.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 3,739 residents of long term care have died after contracting COVID-19.

Well over half of those individuals, 1,922 lost their lives in the second wave.

Last summer after the first wave, both Fullerton and Premier Doug Ford acknowledged the need for an additional 27,000 PSWs to better serve and protect nursing home residents.

This new announcement, nearly six months after the second wave began, drives home the call by CARP for Premier Ford to fire his long term care minister for failing to protect residents in the second wave. You can add your name to the petition and leave your comments at carp.ca
