The federal government asked and received yet another extension to expand access to medical assistance in dying (MAID).
A Quebec Superior Court Justice has agreed to give the Trudeau Liberals a fourth extension; this time until March 26, to bring the law into compliance4 with a 2019 court decision.
Today’s ruling comes the day before the previous deadline was set to expire.
The 2019 decision struck down a provision in the law that permits assisted dying only for those whose natural deaths are ”reasonably foreseeable.”
Bill C-7 would expand assisted dying to intolerably suffering Canadians who are not approaching the end of their lives.
That legislation’s currently stalled in the Commons, where the Conservatives are refusing to pave the way for debate on the government’s response to changes made by the Senate.
