Those used to seeing the Second City Theatre and Wayne Gretzky’s Restaurant at 99 Blue Jays Way in Toronto will now see boards and rubble.

The building was erected at what was then 45 Peter Street in 1930 as a warehouse and factory.  It’s now been demolished to make way for a 47-storey mixed use building including residential, commercial and parking spaces.

That section of Peter Street was renamed Blue Jays Way after the team won the world series in 1992 and ’93.  The street was renumbered to accommodate Gretzky’s “Number 99” when he opened his restaurant shortly thereafter.

A report submitted to the city in 2019 concluded the building was a sort of landmark but fell short of the criteria for heritage preservation.
