The vast majority of Canadians are very concerned about the state of long term care in this country.
A new survey for the National Institute on Ageing and the Canadian Medical Association finds 86 percent of Canadians generally, and 97 percent of those 65 and older are very concerned as a result of how the second wave of COVID-19 has impacted long term care.
And 81 per cent of those asked believe the challenges facing long term care homes predate the pandemic, but COVID-19 has made the situation far worse.
The president of the CMA says our health care systems weren’t originally designed to meet the needs of an aging population .
Doctor Ann Collins says the CMA will continue to work for the devlopment of pan-Canadian standards related to long term care, noting we now have a limited window to act to prevent future tragedies.
The Zoomers’ Group CARP is calling for long term care reform as part of a campaign which also calls for Ontario Premier Doug Ford to fire his long term care minister for failing to protect residents in the province’s nursing homes during the second wave of the pandemic.
