While non essential retailers began reopening in both Toronto and Peel Region Monday, there is a push in Mississauga to move to the red zone of the province’s colour-coded system of restrictions sooner rather than later.

Mississauga’s Mayor Bonnie Crombie says her city’s COVID-19 numbers are down and so she says she remains hopeful that her city may be able to further reopen before the grey zone restrictions expire on March 22nd.

And the head of Mississauga’s Board of Trade David Wojcik calls it “very disappointing” that Mississauga was not allowed to reopen in the red zone Monday.

“But we are of course extremely happy for our retailers that they have been able to open, even with the reduced capacity. They’ve been closed down for far too long and many of them won’t reopen,” Wojcik explained.

Peel’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh says the COVID case numbers, especially the more contagious variants, are simply to high to consider the red zone at this time.

Peel Region is made up of Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.
