Some Canadian Zoomer music legends earned Juno nominations this year as the annual event celebrates its 50th anniversary.
“Almost a year ago today, our music community lost their livelihoods, our artists and live music sector have been deeply affected by the pandemic,” said Allan Reid CEO of CARAS, Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
But Reid says this year’s Juno Awards will be a beacon of hope as musicians adapted to create and release music. In fact, this pandemic year saw the most submissions in Juno history.
The late Leonard Cohen is nominated for album of the year Thanks for the Dance.
And the iconic Bruce Cockburn received his 32nd career Juno nomination but his first for instrumental album of the year.
On the classical side for album of the year solo or chamber, nominated is Bach and Brahms Reimagined by James Ehnes, Jon Kimura Parker with Andrew Armstrong.
Orchestre symphonique de Montréal earned its 55th nomination, the most ever for any classical orchestra.
And Toronto Mendelssohn Choir with Toronto Symphony Orchestra are up for Classical album of the year: vocal or choral.
Zoomer Media friend Matt Dusk is up for vocal Jazz album.
And multi-platinum award-winning singer and songwriter Jann Arden will be inducted to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
In a year where giving back took on a whole new meaning, The Tragicially Hip will receive the humanitarian award.
The Junos will broadcast from Toronto with a 50th anniversary awards show May 16. The full list of nominees here
