Premier Doug Ford has accused Indigenous New Democrat MPP Sol Mamakwa of vaccine queue-jumping.

“But the member flew in too, to get his vaccine so thank you for doing that and kinda jumping the line and I talked to a few Chiefs who were pretty upset about that,” said Ford during Question Period in the legislature.

MPP Mamakwa calls the accusation disrespectful and says he was invited by First Nation elders to get the vaccine to dispel hesitancy in northern Indigenous communities.

“It’s about a message that the vaccine is safe, and I got letters in writing whereby I was invited to take the vaccine,” responded Mamakwa.

Green party Leader Mike Schreiner fought back tears when talking about the accusation.

“To accuse one of the most respected members of the legislature of queue jumping when he was just doing his job, and showing leadership is completely inappropriate and needs to apologize, I’m really sorry I didn’t think I would get emotional but I’ve been feeling numb ever since that moment happened.”

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is also calling on the Premier to apologize but Health Minister Christine Elliott seemed to agree with the Premier that the MPP jumped the queue.

“The Premier was just expressing a degree of frustration because he knows how important the work is that we’re doing,” said Elliott. “We are asking all people everywhere in Ontario to please wait until your turn comes.”
