Premier Doug Ford has privately apologized to an Indigenous NDP member for accusing him of vaccine queue jumping. The two had a brief phone conversation Friday afternoon.
While MPP Sol Mamakwa says he didn’t accept the apology, he appreciated the call.
He’s instead asking Ford to make a public apology to Indigenous people across Ontario. Ford invited the NDP member to meet face to face when the legislature resumes but Mamakwa suggests a better meeting location.
“I would rather see him in the fly in community of Northern Ontario where there is a housing crisis, where there is a water crisis, where there is an infrastructure crisis,” said Mamakwa. “It’s not just simply going to his office and having a cup of tea.”
Mamakwa has said he was invited by community leaders to get the vaccine to help combat vaccine hesitancy among Indigenous residents.
He also says Ford’s comment bring to mind colonialism, racism and oppression.
