Hours after one of the Canadians being held by China stood trial, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Beijing’s treatment of Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig threatens ”respect for the rule of law” and its relationships with the West.
”China needs to understand that it is not just about two Canadians.   It is about the respect for the rule of law and relationships with a broad range of Western countries that is at play with the arbitrary detention and the coercive diplomacy they have engaged in,’ said Trudeau.
The prime minister by holding Spavor’s hearing in ”secret” and keeping representatives from Canada and other allies out of the courtroom made it hard to determine what was happening.

Kovrig’s hearing is scheduled for Monday.
Trudeau repeated that Canada would continue to keep working to bring them home as soon as possible.
