As the AstraZeneca vaccine program expands in Ontario pharmacies and doctors offices this week for people 60 and over, there is word from the pharmaceutical giant that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is 79-percent effective against symptoms of COVID-19 and 100-percent effective against severe disease and hospitalization.

A statement form the drugmaker says its experts did not identify any safety concerns, including no increased risk of rare blood clots identified in Norway and Denmark.

Thirty-thousand volunteers took part in the advanced trial research in the U.S. Twenty-thousand were given the AstraZeneca vaccine, while the rest received placebo shots.

While the AstraZeneca vaccine has been authorized in more than 50 countries worldwide, but not in the U.S., scientists have been awaiting results of the American study in hopes it will clear up some of the confusion about just how well it really works.

Here in Ontario, an expanded list of pharmacies and doctors’ offices begin giving the AstraZeneca shot to people 60 and over.

Canada is expecting a massive influx of COVID-19 vaccine deliveries this week.

Word from Health Canada that 1.2 million doses of the Pfizer-BiONtech vaccine arrive kicking off weekly shipments of at least one million doses for the foreseeable future.

Two shipments of COVID shots from Moderna are also set to land in the next seven days, totalling 846,000 doses.
