The man who first brought Captain James T Kirk to life is celebrating a milestone today.

Canadian icon William Shatner turns 90. He was born in Montreal on March 22nd, 1931.

Shatner played Captain Kirk over Star Trek’s three seasons from 1966-69. He also starred in six movies based on the original series and returned to the role in 1994 for Star Trek: Generations alongside Patrick Stewart.

His career on stage and screen is far more than just that one role. Among his many roles, Shatner won two Emmy awards for his role on Boston Legal, a show that lasted from 2004-2008.

He trained as a Shakespearean actor and served as Christopher Plummer’s understudy at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in the 50s.

Over his decades-long career, he played a variety of roles like “The Big Giant Head” on the NBC sitcom “3rd Rock from the Sun” and also was known for his spoken word albums.

He stars in a new movie “Senior Moment” that will be released this month.
