Ontario’s Associate Medical Officer of Health is hearing the stories of seniors being locked down even as most have been vaccinated.

“How do we put the home back in long term care home, because this is where people live,” commented Dr. Barbara Yaffe.

“We’re hoping to modify the outbreak definitions so that it’s more in keeping with what we use in other settings, but yet maintaining vigilance.”

On the issue of vaccine intervals for seniors, the provincial health table is waiting for recommendations from the national vaccine regulatory body on whether the interval between doses should be shortened.

“We have a clinical advisory group to look at this and identify if there are any specific groups that should have a shorter interval between the two doses and it’s my understanding that NACI, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization, is also considering this.”

She’s expecting to see the recommendations within the next week.

Within the general population, Dr. Yaffe says trends remain concerning with COVID cases, hospitalizations and ICU numbers all rising. She adds today’s case count of about 2,100 excluding a data catch up is the highest since January.

And just like last year for Passover and Easter, the advice from provincial health experts is, don’t mingle.
