For 150-years it’s been home to everything from classical music, to eclectic events and occupants.

London’s Royal Albert Hall turns 150 years old today.

The Hall’s archive manager says the idea if it being an elitist venue is just not true.  Liz Harper describes it more like the nation’s “village hall” because of its eclectic events and occupants.  She points to the fact that at one point the lavatories had to be reinforced to accommodate Sumo wrestlers.

Money was raised for its construction by selling tickets in advance. The first twenty seats were bought by Queen Victoria and still make up the royal box today.
