More than two million doses of vaccines are set to arrive in Canada this week.
This total includes the first batch of AstraZeneca vaccines from the global vaccine-sharing initiative known as the COVAX Facility.
Canada has contributed $440-million to COVAX; half to secure up to 15 million doses of vaccines for Canada and half to buy vaccines for countries that cannot afford to purchase their own.
While any member country can draw on COVAX supplies for its own use, there has been criticism of Canada for undermining the spirit of the initiative, which is to ensure vaccines are equitably distributed to poor nations.
Mississauga’s mayor meantime is calling for more vaccines to be distributed to Peel Region.
“We’ve been saying, when your house is on fire and the firetrucks come, they’re not watering the houses around you, they should be watering your house,” says Bonnie Crombie.
Crombie says Peel represents twenty percent of the COVID cases, so the region should be receiving about 20 percent of the available vaccine and it’s not.
