Peel Region has ordered all schools to close and move to remote learning starting tomorrow, Tuesday April 6th. The closure is tentatively set to end April 18 but this date could be extended.
This decision impacts schools in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.
Peel’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh made the decision alone, despite the government’s previous announcement that schools would stay open during the four week provincial shut down.
Students and teachers were set to return Tuesday April 5th after the Easter break. In a statement, health officials say the spring break will go ahead as planned from April 12 to 16.
Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie says it’s the right decision.
“In Peel we have 24 schools in outbreak, 15 of them are in Mississauga but schools aren’t the source of the spread,” said Crombie. “This wave happens to be the most menacing of all the waves.”
