Ontario’s police watchdog has decided there will not be any charges laid against Peel Police in the death of Ejaz Choudry, a 62-year-old father of four with schizophrenia.
His family called a non-emergency line for help while he was in crisis June 20, 2020.
Special Investigations Unit (SIU) director Joseph Martino concluded the officer who fired twice at Choudry, acted reasonably when he opened fire from the balcony of the second-story apartment unit.
The SIU says officers tried to first subdue by firing a stun gun, then rubber bullets before finally using a handgun.
Police claim Choudry was armed with a 20-centimetre long knife when he moved toward them.
