Celebrated German mezzo-soprano, Christa Ludwig has died.
Ludwig made her operatic debut in Frankfurt in 1946.
Over a nearly 50-year career she appeared on the world’s most prestigious opera stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden and La Scala, before retiring in 1994.
Ludwig received a number of international awards and in 2010 was appointed the Officer of the Legion of Honour in France.
Christa Ludwig was 93.
