A former Supreme Court justice and one-time UN high commissioner for human rights has been appointed by Ottawa to to head an independent review of sexual assault, harassment and other misconduct within the Canadian Armed Forces.
Louise Arbour’s appointment comes almost three months after the Trudeau government and military were rocked by allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour by top military commanders.
She’s being asked to help set up an independent system for victims and others to report incidents, plus to review all aspects of the military’s approach to preventing misconduct and disciplining offenders.
Arbour will not be looking at individual cases, some of which are currently being investigated, but instead will recommend how the military can do better.
