A $90-million lawsuit has been launched by the Toronto District School Board against the city, its fire and police services and the Ontario Fire Marshal over the 2019 fire that destroyed York Memorial Collegiate Institute.
The TDSB alleges the scene was not put under a proper fire watch which led to the ”rekindling” of an initial smaller fire.
”The TFS (Toronto Fire Service) assumed that the fire was out and that a fire watch was not required,” the suit alleges.
In a statement, the City of Toronto says staff fully cooperated in the investigation of the fires and that the allegations are ”patently untrue and irresponsible.”
”It is unconscionable that the TDSB and its insurers wold impugn the integrity of Fire Chief Matthew Pegg and other Toronto Fire Services staff.”
The interim education director says the TDSB will continue to rebuild the school regardless of the outcome of the legal action.
No one was hurt in the fire but 900 students and staff have had to be relocated.
